What is the purpose of this qualification?

The 13-credit Pearson BTEC Level 1 Certificate extends the work-related focus of the Pearson BTEC Level 1 Award and covers some of the knowledge and practical skills required for a particular vocational sector. This qualification offers an engaging programme for those who are clear about the vocational area that they wish to learn more about childcare. This course will also help learners with the knowledge skills to support, and prepare for, working in a nursery, Early years or childcare environment. 

What does this qualification cover?

All the content of this qualification relates directly to the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to support students in progressing to further study in the child care or related sector. Students needs to complete minimum 13 credits from a choice of 24 units that will be chosen between yourself and your assessor. Learners will cover topics such as communicating with children, engaging children in a group activity, encouraging children to eat healthily, keeping children safe etc. The choice of units available enables the precise nature of the qualification to be tailored to meet the interests and progression aspirations of individual groups of students.

How is this qualification assessed?

This qualification is assessed through internal assessment by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods  (written assignments, practical tasks, portfolio of evidence, centre devised assessments etc).

Who could take this qualification?

Pearson BTEC Level 1 qualifications are designed to enhance learners’ work and life skills in a range of vocational contexts. They are appropriate for a diverse range of learners including: 14–19 year-old learners, adults returning to study,  those seeking to develop greater independence and  those who have not yet achieved accredited qualifications.

No prior qualifications are required, however students will need sufficient written English skills to successfully complete assignments and may be assessed in literacy at enrolment to check this.
